Cincinnati Custom Decks builds decks throughout Cincinnati and the neighbouring river valley communities. Here is what the work costs in this market in 2026.
Plenty of price guides quote a band so broad it cannot guide a decision. This page is tied to local conditions and breaks the total into its parts, so a quote can be judged line by line instead of by the final figure alone.
Installed deck cost ranges in Cincinnati, 2026.
| Deck size | Pressure treated, installed | Capped composite, installed |
|---|---|---|
| 240 square feet | $8,900 to $15,100 | $15,100 to $23,800 |
| 320 square feet | $11,800 to $20,200 | $20,200 to $31,700 |
| 400 square feet | $14,800 to $25,200 | $25,200 to $39,600 |
| 500 square feet | $18,500 to $31,500 | $31,500 to $49,500 |
Each range covers footings, framing, decking, railing and one flight of stairs. The sections below explain what shifts those numbers.
Where the money actually goes
Take a 320 square foot elevated composite deck as the example. The budget divides roughly as follows, percentages of the finished job from excavation to final clean.
Labour, 35 to 45 percent
Excavation, concrete, framing, decking, railing, stairs and site clean. It is the biggest single block and it barely changes if you select a different board. On the hillside properties above the river valley it lands near the top of the range, because a compact excavator frequently cannot reach behind the house and the holes are opened by hand.
Decking boards, 20 to 30 percent
The line buyers compare first. Choosing a premium composite over an entry level one rarely moves the total by more than ten percent.
Railings, 12 to 25 percent
Charged by the running foot, and a deck’s edge does not grow in step with its floor area. A long and narrow platform carries much more rail than a compact square of the same size.
Framing lumber and hardware, 10 to 15 percent
Joists, beams, ledger board, hangers, structural fasteners and joist tape. This is not the place to economise.
Footings and concrete, 5 to 10 percent
Excavation, concrete, post bases and the inspection that follows. It climbs on the expansive clay that underlies a great deal of Hamilton and Clermont counties, where a pad is often specified wider than the code minimum and where each post must drain properly through the annual freeze and thaw.
Permit and disposal, 3 to 6 percent
Fees are set separately by the City of Cincinnati, Mason, West Chester, Anderson Township, Blue Ash and Loveland. Removal of an old structure applies when the project is a replacement.
What drives a quote up
Height
Elevation buys longer posts, extra bracing, a longer flight of stairs and more guard. Raising a deck from ground level to six feet costs far more than the floor area alone would suggest, because 30 inches is where a guard becomes mandatory and the staircase keeps extending above that.
On the walkout properties that fall toward the Little Miami this is the dominant cost, and it explains how two decks of the same size can differ by thousands.
Stairs
A flight means stringers, a set of treads and risers, a landing, footings below that landing, and a guard plus handrail on both sides. Adding a second flight commonly costs $1,600 to $3,200, and it is normally the first extra to remove.
Shape
Angles, curves, bump outs and insets all consume labour and produce waste. A rectangle is not a poor relation. It is the geometry that delivers the greatest usable area for the money.
Access
If a machine cannot get to the back garden, the holes are dug by hand and the material is carried in. On the tight lots and the steep ravine sites in Blue Ash and Anderson Township this adds 8 to 15 percent to the labour, and a straight estimator flags it at the survey rather than after the crew arrives.
Design review
Mason and the majority of West Chester neighbourhoods approve appearance before they approve structure. The cost may be small, but a meeting cycle is added, and missing one of those meetings can cost a month of building weather.
Roofs and structures
A covered section or a screened porch belongs to a heavier class of construction that needs deeper footings and a framed roof, and it is estimated as a project in its own right rather than an optional extra.
What drives a quote down
Staying under 30 inches
No guard is needed at all. On a deck of 320 square feet the saving runs from $3,200 to $6,500, and the view stays open. Where the sill height allows dropping the surface and adding a single step, this is the strongest value move available.
One stair run rather than two
A single flight keeps a second set of stringers, a second landing, its footings and the extra handrail off the invoice. On a deck with a generous landing the saving can reach several thousand dollars.
A simple rectangle
Square and rectangular footprints go together faster, generate less waste and need no special blocking. Add a clipped corner or an inset and both labour and material rise.
Treated now, composite later
Frame at 16 inch centres so the structure already suits composite, fit treated boards today, then replace only the surface a decade or so later. The frame carries the expense and it is only paid for once.
Autumn scheduling
Spring brings the rush. Late summer and autumn are when crews actually have space, and the ground here is generally easier to work before winter sets in.
What never to cut
Footing depth, joist centres and the fixing of the guard posts. Those three separate a deck with a twenty five year life from one that becomes a repair job within eight. They are exactly the items a cheap quote is most likely to omit without saying so. In Cincinnati the footing depth carries extra weight, because the frost line runs close to 32 inches and the clay shifts as moisture rises and falls.
Ask each bidder for the footing depth, the joist centres and the method used to fasten the guard posts to the frame. Once those figures are written down, most of the difference between quotes explains itself.
Getting a number for your own deck
Averages are honest but your garden is not average. Slope, access, sill height, soil and the things you want from the space all alter the result. We survey the site, talk through the options and leave you with a written scope and price at no charge.
Read deck design for the process behind those drawings, or deck construction for the way the build is carried out once the figure is agreed.

Why homeowners pick Cincinnati Custom Decks
Footings below the frost line
The Ohio River valley swings above and below freezing all winter. Every post we set lands on a poured footing below the local frost depth, which is what keeps a deck level through a decade of heave and thaw.
Permits and inspections handled
We work out which department your address answers to, pull the permit, meet the inspector and hand you the signed card. An unpermitted deck becomes your problem the day you sell the house.
Written scope before we start
Materials, framing spec, hardware, timeline and price in writing before anybody swings a hammer. No verbal change orders.
Deck Cost Guide questions we get asked
What does a deck cost in Cincinnati in 2026?
The installed figure for a simple elevated deck of 320 square feet in pressure treated pine lands near $11,800 to $20,200, and the same footprint in capped composite near $20,200 to $31,700. That works out at $37 to $63 per square foot in treated timber and $63 to $99 in composite, inclusive of footings, framing, surface, railing and a single flight of stairs. A deck that stays below the 30 inch threshold costs less again, since no guard is needed.
Why is there such a spread between quotes?
As a rule the bids do not describe the same structure. Footing depth, joist centres and the method of fixing the guard posts account for most of the difference. One bidder assumes pads on the surface, joists at 24 inches and posts driven through the decking. Another pours below the frost line, frames at 16 inches and through bolts the posts. Request those three details in writing from every bidder and the spread usually becomes understandable.
How much of the budget goes on the decking itself?
Roughly a quarter to a third. The remainder is footings, framing, railings, stairs and the labour to assemble them, and none of those costs fall because the board is cheaper. That is the reason upgrading from a basic composite to a premium one often costs less than adding a second set of stairs.
Will a deck improve what my house is worth?
It returns a solid portion of its cost when the property sells, and it ranks among the more dependable outdoor investments, although the figure depends on the market and on the quality of construction. A deck with a permit and in sound condition is an asset. One built without a permit becomes a negotiating point for the buyer's agent, and settling it at closing costs more than the permit ever would have.
How can I reduce the price without cutting corners?
Several moves are free of compromise. Hold the surface below 30 inches and no guard is needed. Hold the footprint to a rectangle, since every angle and return adds labour. Use a single stair run instead of two. Frame now at composite ready centres but deck in treated timber, leaving the surface to be replaced later. Footing depth, joist centres and guard fixing are not on that list.
When should I book the work to get the best price?
Late summer into autumn. Spring is when the phone rings constantly, so that is where the pressure sits. Ground is usually easier to open in autumn than in a wet spring, material arrives sooner, and the deck is finished and waiting before the next season instead of stuck behind a queue.
